Your Google smartwatch is now better at flagging health issues before there's a crisis. The company is rolling out its promised Health Guardian, a proactive Google Health tool whose passive tracking alerts you to concerning trends.
The previously mentioned feature looks for "subtle physiological shifts" that can lead to serious health problems. Blood pressure trends that manifest in your pulse and motion can highlight heart and kidney trouble. Sleep breathing quality trends help you improve bedtime, while insulin resistance trends gauge your metabolic health.
Google is also enabling a potentially life-saving breathing emergency detection feature, starting with some European countries. If your blood oxygen level crashes, the opt-in system can automatically call emergency services and contacts. You could get help if you're choking, facing severe pneumonia, or otherwise unable to call on your own.
The company stresses that all the features are based on clinical research and scientist feedback using foundation AI models trained on volunteered health data. Google's approach also doesn't require perfect data, as it can address gaps when there are missing or incomplete readings.
Health Guardian will reach Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 owners starting this week. You should expect the first trends to reach the Google Health app in early October. The additional tracking is free.
The missing piece in the puzzle is finally cleared for use in the United States.
You'll also have access to Health Guardian if you use a Fitbit Air , with catches. It won't monitor sleep breathing, and you'll have to subscribe to the $10 per month ($100 per year) Google Health Premium service when the functionality is ready later this year.
