Alpine's next four-seat electric sports car is caught in a tug-of-war between heritage and a clean-sheet look. Inside the company, some designers wanted the 2+2 to recall the wedge-shaped look of the A310 from the 1970s and 1980s. Others pushed for a clean, Alpenglow-inspired shape that looks straight ahead instead of back.
Alpine CEO Philippe Krief has now ended that debate. The electric 2+2 will not echo the A310 or follow the A310 Vision show car that drew crowds at the Paris Motor Show. It is getting its own face instead, described as very modern, with no retro cues borrowed from any past Alpine.
The 2+2 will use the Alpine Performance Platform, a modular structure built to support different body styles and powertrains. The next-generation A110 will be the first sports car on that hardware. Alpine guidance points to an electric successor arriving around 2027, without a specific on-sale month yet.
What the 2+2 will not share is the A110's look, or anyone else's. Krief calls the car "very, very modern," steering it away from the retro-leaning proposal that designers explored earlier before backing off.
That earlier idea tied the 2+2 loosely to the A310 Vision concept that turned heads in Paris. Alpine officially presents that retro-futuristic concept as an independent design study inspired by the original A310 and built to show what the APP platform can handle.
Krief's thinking comes down to how widely each classic is known. He said:
'If the A110 is recognised worldwide as an absolute timeless beauty, the A310 is loved by French guys and connoisseurs, but the appeal is more niche.'
