Turns out the oft-delayed, much-anticipated Batman Part II has a backup plan to deal with its latest hiccup, and it’s a really great one, actually. Steven Soderbergh—a veteran filmmaker who’s made both indie breakouts and commercial blockbusters—is coming aboard to help finish principal photography. Production on the Robert Pattinson-starring superhero sequel hit pause last week when director and co-writer Matt Reeves needed to address a personal matter.
Deadline reports that “Soderbergh has been [a] longtime admirer of Reeves’ work, and with Reeves unable to be on set, the Oscar-winning director offered to help with finishing principal photography on the film.” Additionally, “the two will work together and remain in communication until filming has ended, with Reeves taking over post-production duties when he is ready to return.”
The trade had statements from both DC Studios and Soderbergh to share.
From the studio: “As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”
And from Soderbergh: “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent.
