Mark Rober told Business Insider he thinks his content has a “moat” that will keep it safe from being affected by the AI slop deluge.
But, at the same time, he’s said his team is using generative AI as a “thought partner” for writing, and that it can make “the perfect meal” for students using his Class CrunchLabs modules.
Rober has 85 million subscribers on YouTube and runs CrunchLabs, which mails STEM-themed learning and experiment kits out to kids every month. He’s also, of course, behind the aforementioned Class CrunchLabs, a full-scale science curriculum for third- to eighth-graders that he told Tubefilter “hides the vegetables” of STEM learning in fun videos with kids’ favorite content creators. (Class CrunchLabs is also an official Google/YouTube partner, and received a $2.5 million grant from the tech giant’s charitable arm Google.org.)
With BI, Rober addressed creators’ anxiety about AI-generated videos encroaching on the watch time that should go to their genuine content.
“Do you want to see a simulation of someone dunking a basketball with a sick trick, or do you want to see someone actually do it?” he told BI. “The fact that [viewers] know it’s real is what makes it crazy.”
He said creators should be reassured that “[o]ur brains developed for hundreds of thousands of years with human connection,” and viewers want “real and authentic” content filmed by people who interact with the world around them.
He also added that people need to retain their cognitive skills instead of just ChatGPTing everything.
