The chat platform is classifying most users as adult or teen automatically using account patterns instead of selfies. The shift follows a 2025 vendor breach and months of privacy backlash, but leaves adults open to being locked out by an algorithm with no warning.

Discord's age assurance system has been live globally since September 23, 2026, and it works differently to what most users expected. More than 90% of accounts will not be asked to confirm their age at all. Instead, Discord will automatically sort users into either the Adult or Teen age group based on markers such as how long the account has existed, the servers they're in and their general activity levels.

For social media marketers running brand communities, creator programmes, or customer support on Discord, that distinction matters. The same server can now produce different experiences depending on the member's age group, and you will not know which members see what until they tell you.

If you're in the teen age group (13 to 17), you can keep messaging friends, joining voice calls, and participating in non-age-restricted servers, but with additional safety protections that block age-restricted content, spaces, and settings. Teen accounts will automatically be blocked from accessing age-restricted servers or channels, message requests from people who aren't their friends will go to a separate message requests inbox, and teens will get alerts when accepting friend requests from someone they don't share mutual friends with.
