September is coming to an end, closing off a ridiculously busy month for new games. That won’t let up in October. Gears of War: E-Day, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, and more are making for another crowded month.

Buried in that list of high-profile games are also several exciting indies that deserve to be on your radar too. That includes some follow-ups to 2020s cult classics, a new multiplayer game for the co-op crowd, and a trippy action game that looks like the perfect complement to Control Resonant. Don’t let these six games fall through the cracks; wishlist them on Steam if any of them catch your eye.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer is the latest game from Deconstructeam, the developer behind 2023’s The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. It has quite the premise: You head back to your hometown and destroy it with a sledgehammer. It promises to be an emotional and rage-filled story with plenty of catharsis. It will be released Oct. 27.

If you played 2020’s excellent Umurangi Generation , you know why developer Origame Digital’s follow-up, Penguin Colony , is a big deal. But you don’t need to know the developer’s pedigree to get excited about the year’s strangest game: a lo-fi Lovecraftian horror story about penguins marching into madness.
