Nike Slaps a Big ‘NYC’ on Its Most Cushioned Running Shoe Ahead of the NYC Marathon

The text hit is inspired by a classic basketball sneaker from the '90s.

Nike might not be the official sponsor of the New York City Marathon, but that hasn’t stopped it from cooking up something special for one of the biggest running events in the world.

The Nike Vomero Premium NYC sees its Air More Uptempo-inspired branding revised with the city’s initials popping in a neon green Lemon Venom. This mark on the lateral side, the unchanged “Air” on the medial and the tongue’s branding all make use of the bold color. Black serves as a platform throughout the rest of the sneaker, save for the two Air Zoom units that provide another pop of color.

First launched last year, the Vomero Premium is the most cushioned shoe of the max-cushioned Vomero line. It sits with a massive 55mm stack height at the heel, the tallest in Nike’s history and dropping 10mm to the forefoot, with a full slab of ZoomX foam surrounding the Air Zoom units. Overall, this system offers energy return of roughly 85 percent and is intended primarily for recovery or everyday runs.

In addition to the upper’s branding inspired by the ’90s basketball shoe, the Vomero Premium also features an outsole pattern invoking Nike’s seminal waffle iron mold. “Not Approved by World Athletics” also appears on the midsole’s heel, as the sport’s governing body allows a maximum stack height of 40mm in shoes worn by professionals in road races.

Nike recently dropped a “Chi” edition of the Vomero premium for the Chicago Marathon, of which it is a sponsor, and a Melitta Baumeister collaboration revisioned it through a fashionably burnished lens earlier this year.
