Hyundai Card has launched Alphabet Card, a standalone credit card brand in South Korea. More than 150,000 cards were issued within three months of launch.
The new range is built around specific spending categories rather than a single general-purpose offer. It targets lifestyles linked to areas including beauty, digital payments, subscriptions, dining and travel.
Each card is tied to a letter of the alphabet representing a category. Alphabet Card B stands for Beauty and Alphabet Card T for Travel, using a naming system designed to make products easier to identify.
The benefits are also simple, offering straightforward rewards such as 10% discounts in designated categories, instead of the more complex points or rewards structures often seen in the market.
A central part of the launch is the decision to separate the product identity from the parent brand's usual presentation. Hyundai Card created a distinct visual identity for Alphabet Card, including a custom typeface and dedicated packaging, and removed the Hyundai Card logo from the front of the cards.
The approach marks a notable branding move for a financial services group, where credit card products are usually closely tied to a corporate master brand. In this case, Alphabet Card has been presented as an independent consumer-facing label with its own design language.
The strategy reflects broader changes in South Korean consumer markets, where spending patterns have become more fragmented across categories such as beauty, fashion and digital services. Hyundai Card is seeking to address that shift with products focused on narrower use cases rather than broad everyday spending.
