The hotelier revisits his Studio 54 roots with a new nightclub and a sprawling rooftop gathering space as his latest hotel opens on the Sunset Strip.
Ian Schrager is unveiling two key spaces at his new Public West Hollywood hotel: Studio, a 150-person nightclub that revisits the spirit of Studio 54, and The Roof, a 16,000-square-foot landscaped rooftop terrace with 360-degree views of Los Angeles.
The hotel, opening Friday, marks a new chapter for the 80-year-old hotelier and nightlife visionary, nearly five decades after he helped transform New York nightlife. Public West Hollywood, located at 8300 Sunset Boulevard in the former Standard hotel building, is the second location of his Public hotel brand and his third West Hollywood hotel, following the Mondrian in the 1990s and the West Hollywood Edition in 2019, both on the Sunset Strip.
Schrager sees the opening as a way to bring a fresh perspective to the Sunset Strip rather than fill a particular gap.
“There’s always an opportunity to bring well thought out, creative, inspired projects to a place,” he told WWD, adding that L.A. remains a natural market for his brand of hospitality.
“I’ve never used the word studio before because I thought it was a crass exploitation,” he said.
Still, he sees the new club as a return to Studio 54’s original spirit: “non-stop sweaty dancing, almost in a tribal fashion, with a great soundstage type music system, with great music, so that people could really let their hair down and come in here and dance and have fun.”
