Samsung SDI has signed a deal to supply 1 GWh of nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) battery storage to a single US customer, with all cells and modules to be manufactured in the United States.
Under the agreement with utility and independent power producer Alpha Omega Power (APO), Samsung SDI is expected to deliver its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7 containerized energy storage to projects scheduled to being construction in 2027. These will include projects in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) energy markets.
All cells and modules for the battery containers covered in the supply agreement will be manufactured at Samsung SDI’s StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant in Kokomo, Indiana, according to the manufacturer, with delivery expected before the end of 2026.
In choosing Samsung SDI as a supplier, APO is putting significant investment into NCA chemistry battery storage in a global market where cells using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) based chemistry continue to lead. The investment also comes as the US government mulls further restrictions on imported power equipment.
Samsung SDI reports that the SBB 1.7 uses a high-nickel NCA chemistry and delivers 17% higher energy density than its predecessor, the SBB 1.5, while maintaining the same 20-foot footprint. The manufacturer also highlights fire safety as a key feature of the design, noting the battery storage solution incorporates Samsung SDI’s proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection technology, which directly injects fire-extinguishing agents into individual battery modules.
