Market infrastructure provider Puro.earth has crossed 2 million CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) issued within its central registry, marking 2 million tons of independently verified engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR) certified since its inaugural issuance in 2019.
The milestone follows 18 months after the platform reached 1 million issuances in March 2025. The second million credits were generated in 19 months, representing less than a third of the time required to produce the initial million CORCs.
The platform’s current issuance velocity averages more than 50,000 CORCs per month – a fourfold increase over its historical six-year average. According to registry forecasts, annual issuance is projected to exceed 1 million CORCs in 2026 before expanding to 1.9 million CORCs in 2027.
All credits issued within the second million cohort were certified under methodologies requiring physical carbon storage durability of at least 100 years. The standard has also secured program-level Core Carbon Principles (CCP) eligibility from the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).
Across the 2 million CORCs issued to date, the technological distribution spans multiple removal pathways:
Biochar accounts for 49% of total volumes, followed by geologically stored carbon, encompassing Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) and Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS), at 31%. Carbonated materials represent 4%, terrestrial biomass storage accounts for 0.8%, and enhanced rock weathering makes up 0.6%.
