A new open call launched by Newlab, Shell GameChanger, and Louisiana Innovation is offering support for carbon removal pilot deployments in Louisiana across a range of different technologies.
The Louisiana Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Initiative was announced last month as a public-private effort that aims to position Louisiana as a global leader for CO2 removal technology development and deployment.
Through this call, Newlab, Shell GameChanger, and Louisiana Innovation will back CDR technology companies and project developers, intending to demonstrate how Louisiana’s industrial, geological, coastal, and agricultural resources could support selected pathways while also identifying deployment opportunities and constraints.
The call is open to solutions centered around direct air capture (DAC) and hybrid pathways, biomass-based approaches, such as biochar, biomass storage, bio-oil, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), marine CDR, enhanced rock weathering (ERW), and innovations in sensing, measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV).
Launched on October 16, 2026, the call will be accepting applications by November 13, 2026.
The call will support high-durability CDR projects at three different commercial and technical readiness levels.
In the first readiness tier, the call is looking for pilot-stage projects that have an indicative scale for their next deployment milestone of up to 1,000 tpa CO2.
The second tier is for projects that have reached a demonstration stage and and an indicative scale for the next deployment milestone of ~1,000 to 10,000 tpa CO2, while the projects in the third readiness tier need to be deployment-ready or near-commercial and pursuing an indicative scale of ~10,000 to 100,000+ tpa CO2.
