Puro.earth has released its CCS+ methodology documents, listing direct air capture and geological storage (DACCS) as the first pathway implemented under its CCS+ Program.
With the CCS+ Program, Puro.earth brings carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methodologies by the CCS+ Initiative into its certification procedures.
Its multi-program approach, on the other hand, enables CDR projects to certify under different recognized programs within the same trusted infrastructure.
Moving forward, CO2 removal credits certified under the CCS+ Program will be issued as CCS+ CRC credits in the Puro Registry. For DACCS suppliers, this enables Puro.earth certification for capture, transport, and storage that issues CCS+ CRC credits for verified DACCS performance.
Puro has also provided specific requirements in its Certification Procedures that can help train Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs) to validate and verify CCS+ Program activities.
The CCS+ methodology was developed as a joint global effort between technology and solution providers, carbon dioxide emitters, CO2 transport and storage providers, academic members, and civil society representatives.
Included in the published documents is a CCS+ Carbon Capture and Storage Methodology, along with modules on Direct Air Capture, CO2 Transport for CCS Projects, and CO2 Storage in Saline Aquifers.
The CCS+ Program publication also provides a tool for differentiating reductions and removals in CCS projects and a tool for CO2 accounting in CCS projects using shared infrastructure.
Lastly, the published documents include a Puro.earth CCS+ Program Annex that outlines the program-specific requirements that apply alongside the Puro.earth Certification Procedures and the CCS+ Initiative’s methodology documents.
