The Publisher of ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Is Now Aiming for Adult Readers

Choose Your Own Adventure books are aimed at YA readers, but they have a cult following among adults who grew up page-flipping through their interactive stories—one reason there’s a feature film from Radio Silence on the way. Now the publisher, Chooseco, is angling to bring new stories to that demographic with the imprint CYOA Unbound, which is aiming to launch this December.

“New stories” is a little bit misleading because one of the inaugural titles is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, reimagined by author C. Davitt Bell. Will the romantically challenged Bennet sisters make different decisions when it comes to their various suitors? At long last, you’ll be able to guide their fates according to your own feelings.

The other one of CYOA Unbound’s first releases will be Culty by writer Fancy Feast, described as “White Lotus meets Sex and the City,” which suggests a spicier milieu than 19th-century England. “Both works of fiction will be imbued with the same magic that Choose Your Own Adventure books have delivered for middle grade readers for decades, but with adult-focused narratives and themes,” according to a press release.

If you’re intrigued by this concept but neither of those two books appeals, here’s some good news: “The publisher plans for the imprint to be genre-spanning. Forthcoming titles are set to include reimagined classics, horror, mysteries, thrillers, romance, and more.”
