For birthdays, Halloween decorations and beyond, these smart lights come with apps, AI agents and endless options.

Holiday lights can be exhausting to put up and take down over and over — and way too much work for birthdays, dinner parties or other special events. But there’s an answer for those woes these days: extra-durable, app-connected smart LED string lights that can display nearly any color, follow schedules and be controlled remotely.

These lights already have dozens of themes to choose from on their platforms, or you can use AI and prompts and images to come up with your own color scheme. My favorite even uses solar power so you don’t have to worry about finding a nearby outlet. Here’s where to start.

Govee’s durable, solar-powered lights can do anything, almost anywhere. They’re an excellent fit for balconies, yards, patios, decks or windows that get plentiful sunlight during the day. Govee’s app is filled with every kind of scene for any holiday or mood, but you can also use the AI prompts to generate other ideas if you want. It’s a very complete set of lights, with large bulbs made to handle all kinds of outdoor conditions. The only catch is that this light string is only 33 feet long, so it’s best used in smaller spaces. Fortunately, I’ve found many other picks with longer strings, if that’s a priority.

Govee’s smart string light upgrades are among the best, with several design changes we particularly like. These lights — which have Matter support and work with Google Home or Alexa — ditch the hanging bulbs for a string light design, making them a whole lot easier to place in a holiday tree, wrap around a wreath and so on.
