I pitted two of the biggest names in the robot mower space against each other; the result was a pleasant surprise.
If you’ve been contemplating a robot lawn mower, you likely have a number of questions about how they perform, especially if you have a complicated lawn layout, as I do. When their respective manufacturers offered me the Sunseeker Elite X7 Plus Gen 2 and the Mova Lidax Ultra 2000 AWD for testing, my first concern was whether they’d be able to handle my large, sloped, obstacle-strewn lawn.
I was pleasantly surprised across the board. Not only was setting up both mowers relatively simple, but I was also impressed by how consistently they managed my lawn.
Sunseeker’s Elite X7 Gen 2 is a premium, wire-free robotic mower that uses built‑in Net‑RTK GPS plus upgraded VSLAM 2.0 vision for centimeter-level positioning, backed by a tri‑wheel all‑wheel‑drive chassis rated for complex terrain and slopes of up to 70%. Translating that into plain English, it doesn’t require physical boundary wires to help it navigate, and it can handle big inclines, which is something older generations of robot mowers struggled with.
It’s designed for lawns up to about 3,000 square meters, with dual floating cutting discs (35 cm width) and a 20 to 100mm electronic cutting-height range, all controlled through a well-designed and intuitive app that supports multizone mapping, virtual boundaries and edge-following modes.
Setting up the Sunseeker was a breeze. After unboxing, I was tasked with installing the base station and the RTK antenna, which is mounted on a post and needs a clear, unobstructed line of sight to the sky.
