Pocket Casts app now available on Android TV

After first coming to Apple TV, the official Pocket Casts app is now available to download on Android TV and Google TV devices.

Officially teased when launching for Apple TV, it has taken a few months to be converted for Android set-top boxes. Unlike casting from your phone or tablet, this is a native app built from the ground up to work once paired with an existing account.

The dedicated experience is tailored to your TV, with a few refinements, including a dedicated “Made for TV” section for video podcasts with promoted content and highlighted content that you can watch and listen to simultaneously. It looks almost identical to the Apple TV version from what we can glean.

You pair using a QR code, and all of your podcast subscriptions, playlists, and account data will be synced with the application. You’re able to start a podcast playing and then close the application or minimize it, and it will continue playing. Any upcoming podcasts in your queue will appear as quick links, allowing you to switch quickly or pick up where you left off, as playback information across your devices is retained.

It’s worth noting that this has taken a couple of weeks to become widely available, as the app was noted in a recent changelog. You may have difficulty when searching directly on a Google TV or Android TV device, but you can “force” Pocket Casts to download from a browser by selecting any of your connected devices on the Play Store.
