OLED iPad Mini Reviewed: Different Now That Duo’s Here

It doesn’t fold, but Apple’s refreshed tiny tablet now feels like a refreshing Duo alternative.

For the last few days, I’ve been living with a handheld tablet made by Apple that comes everywhere with me and can run whatever I want. But it doesn’t fold. And it’s not my phone. And I’m mostly OK with that.

The iPad Mini has returned in a refreshed form that feels even more like a parallel device to the new iPhone Duo. They both have OLED displays. They’re both water-resistant. They both have A20 Pro processors. At $699, is the iPad Mini the consolation prize for someone who’s not ready for an $1,999 and up iPhone Duo, or who can’t afford one?

I admit, I feel a bit of Duo envy. I see it as an iPad you can fit in your pocket, fulfilling some fusion dream I’ve had of compressing Apple’s devices. As an iPad reviewer for years, and someone who’s reviewed many iPad Minis before, I could see the appeal. But starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo is expensive, and there’s a long wait to get one. Oh well.

In my handful of days living with the new Mini, I kept thinking about the Duo, which I’ve only gotten a brief couple of hours with… and also the state of the iPad in 2026, with no new entry-level model released this year. I love the Mini’s improved features, even if they’re sometimes subtle. And while the iPad Mini is more expensive than it’s ever been, it’s also a much more reasonable and mature product, obviously, than the Duo.
