Forward-looking: Microsoft has filed a patent application for technology that could let Xbox games change their stories as players progress. The system would use generative AI to reshape narrative paths, quests, and world details rather than relying solely on prewritten branches. If developed into a product, the approach could push Xbox games toward experiences that respond to how players explore, interact with, and engage with the game world.
The application, published in July and titled "Generative Narrative Game Experience With Player Feedback," describes a system that could create or revise content based on what an individual player does in the game.
The system relies on a narrative state graph, a map of game events, choices, and outcomes. In a typical game, developers build those branches in advance. Microsoft's proposed system would track a player's progress through that map and use generative models to add new paths or alter existing ones.
The design would look beyond obvious choices, such as dialogue options or major story decisions. It could also consider how players explore the game world, which characters they return to, and how they interact with particular places or objects.
The patent says the system could use facial features and other signals to gauge players' emotional reactions. That information, combined with in-game behavior, could help determine which characters, stories, or settings should receive more attention.
For example, a minor character could receive a larger storyline if a player keeps interacting with them. A cave meant to be a small side area could become a larger dungeon with new lore and quests if a player spends more time exploring it.
