Instagram is testing a new feature that will allow select creators to upload long-form videos of up to 90 minutes. Called ‘Features’, the new option will support horizontal videos such as podcasts, interviews and vlogs.
The move is part of Instagram's effort to attract people who want to watch longer videos on the platform, along with the short videos it is already known for.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri spoke about the new feature in an interview with Colin and Samir. “We want to be the most culturally relevant platform, and to do that, we need to show up where people are,” Mosseri said.
Mosseri said he had long been against introducing long-form videos on the platform. However, Tessa, Instagram's vice president of product, said the way creators tell stories and audiences watch videos has changed.
"Instagram wants to support these different formats instead of focusing only on short videos," she said, adding that the platform is also seeing people watch Reels together with friends and family on television, which has influenced its plans for longer content.
Under the current test, Features will allow select creators to upload horizontal videos of up to 90 minutes. These videos will appear on the Explore page and the main feed. This will help users discover longer content while browsing Instagram.
Instagram is also testing a feature that will allow select creators to post Reels linked to their full-length videos. This will let viewers discover a short clip and then watch the complete video on the platform.
