Double-speed playback has rolled out across every major short-form platform since early 2025. The shift isn't about shrinking attention spans, it's about letting viewers decide their own pace, and that changes what social marketers need to optimise for.

Instagram rolled out 2x playback speed for Reels globally in March 2025, following TikTok, which already offered the feature. YouTube Shorts added 2x speed in June 2026, completing the rollout across all three major short-form video platforms. What looked like a convenience feature is now standard infrastructure, and between 25% and 45% of podcast listeners already use 1.25x to 2x playback at least sometimes, suggesting this behaviour has been building outside social video for years.

The pattern across platforms is identical: users long-press on the right or left edge of the screen during playback, and the video plays at 2x speed until they release. There are no other playback speed options at this stage on Instagram, though TikTok offers 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, and 2x. YouTube confirmed that speed settings have been one of the most requested features from the Shorts community, allowing users to double the playback speed on a Short to absorb information more quickly or find their favorite part faster.
