OpenEvidence, Doximity reach settlement in contentious AI legal battle

Healthcare AI startups OpenEvidence and Doximity settled a contentious legal fight over allegations of corporate espionage and cyberattacks, alongside counterclaims of defamation and misinformation.

The two companies reached a settlement in principle on Thursday, leading to a dismissal of all claims and counterclaims with prejudice on Friday, according to court filings in the U.S. District Court in the District of Massachusetts. As part of the dismissal, the judge also ruled that each party would bear its own costs and attorneys’ fees.

Legal representatives for both companies did not respond to requests for comment. The joint notice of settlement did not provide details on the agreement.

The dispute sat at the intersection of AI, cybersecurity, intellectual property and competition law, against the backdrop of a rapidly growing market for physician-facing AI tools.

OpenEvidence, maker of an AI-powered medical search engine for doctors, sued Doximity in Massachusetts federal court in June 2025, alleging unauthorized access to its AI platform, computer fraud, trade secret theft and other misconduct. Doximity, best known for its physician network and workflow tools, has been aggressively expanding its clinical AI offerings.

In the lawsuit, OpenEvidence described the alleged misconduct as a “brazen corporate espionage and defamation campaign that was orchestrated at the highest levels of Doximity—a publicly traded healthcare technology company that has built its brand on physician trust and privacy protection.”

The company alleged in its complaint that Doximity executives and employees impersonated physicians and misused National Provider Identifier credentials to gain access to its AI platform.
