Internal email suggests developer made decision after "carefully observing the challenges in the market and reviewing the team needs for [its] next project"
Ghost of Yōtei developer Sucker Punch Productions has reportedly been hit with layoffs, affecting 24 employees.
According to an internal email obtained by Aftermath, the developer "decided to make some staffing reductions" after "carefully observing the challenges in the market and reviewing the team needs for [its] next project."
"We know this is a lot to take in, and we want to assure you that we did not make this decision lightly," the email stated.
"We have given this a lot of attention and worked to support our affected colleagues during this transition as well as we can [...] There's no getting around that this is a hard day. Next week we will go into more details about the future."
Sucker Punch's most recent release, Ghost of Yōtei, is the sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima. Yōtei launched last October, selling 3.3 million copies in its first month and surpassing Tsushima's sales for the same period.
According to GSD data, Yōtei was Sony's largest first-party PlayStation launch in Europe. It "significantly contributed" to Sony's Q3 results, with digital game and add-on content revenue increasing 6% to $4.8 billion.
Sucker Punch has continued to release content for Yōtei, including a multiplayer mode in March and a complete edition with a single-player narrative expansion launched earlier this month.
