Square Enix Reveals Stunning New Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary Release

Since the series' inception in 1987, music has always been an integral part of Final Fantasy. Across sixteen mainline entries and countless spin-offs, the iconic RPG franchise has used music to amplify emotional moments and stories. As part of ongoing 40th anniversary celebrations, Square Enix has announced a series-spanning soundtrack that already looks like a must-buy.

The Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary Crystal Edition album is a special soundtrack available on Vinyl and CD. It will include music from all sixteen mainline games and is set to be released on Jan. 6, 2027. The official album site expands on the importance of music in the series, saying: "Whether it be the first steps on an epic journey, the act of bonding with your friends, battles with nigh insurmountable odds, or emotional farewells, the music of Final Fantasy has not only helped bring incredible scenes to life, it has provided generations of players with everlasting memories."

The vinyl and CD are now available for pre-order on Square Enix's Japanese storefront. The vinyl costs 8,000 yen ($51) plus tax and contains two 12-inch records. The single-disc CD is priced at 3,600 yen ($23) plus tax. Both versions will also be available on the North American and European storefronts soon, though the listings are not yet up.

Choosing the limited tracklist must have been an undertaking, because I'd be hard-pressed to narrow down each game's soundtrack to one title. How do you choose between "Aerith's Theme" and "One-Winged Angel" in Final Fantasy 7 ?
