Most Unplayable RPG Masterpieces Of All Time, Ranked

RPGs have existed for many decades now, and in that time, we have been graced with a huge number of masterpieces of all shapes and sizes. However, as time goes by, not all of them have aged well, and some of the best games the genre has ever seen have unfortunately become borderline unplayable by modern standards.

That isn't to take away from the greatness these games once represented, and there is still an argument that their stories and worlds hold up today, even if their gameplay doesn't. But when you actually start exploring and engaging on a deeper level, it becomes clear that maybe some games are better left in the past.

Whether the apocalypse is approaching, already unfolding, or long past, these RPGs are among the best at exploring it.

Ultima 7: The Black Gate remains one of the most ambitious RPGs ever created, featuring a living world where NPCs follow daily routines and nearly every object can be manipulated. You have so much freedom to explore and engage with the world however you choose, and that freedom helped establish a lot of RPG principles that modern games still follow.

Unfortunately, its age creates substantial barriers, even for die-hard RPG fans. The interface is cumbersome, inventory management is awkward, and the real-time combat can feel clunky. If, like me, you aren't too familiar with older RPG conventions, the experience will end up feeling pretty poor despite the greatness hidden within.

Might and Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven is a textbook CRPG, presenting you with a tremendous world filled with sprawling dungeons and dangerous enemies, and you have just the party to deal with them.
