Sony published its latest financial results today, which include an update on the PS5’s lifetime sales. There’s also a note on the development of the PS6, and it’s really starting to sound like it might be full steam ahead on a 2028 launch for PlayStation’s next-gen console.
“Looking ahead to the next fiscal year, we aim to continue to enhance user engagement and further strengthen monetization through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service,” Sony CFO Lin Tao said during today’s financial results (thanks, VGC), adding, “We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform .”
“From next fiscal year onward, there will be investment in the new platform. For future growth, we have to attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that,” Tao continued, clarifying that an announcement on the specifics will be made at an appropriate time in the future.
A renewed focus on PS6 development during the next fiscal year, which will begin in April 2027, certainly sounds like the plan is for PlayStation to have its next console ready for release at some point in 2028. Likely towards the end of the year, similar to the PS5 launch in November 2025.
9 million units - the rate at which they are being sold is “gradually declining as expected”. Not only because the console is six years old, but because memory shortages and rising RAM costs mean a new PS5 is now considerably more expensive than it was in 2020.
