India’s data centre boom: Are we giving away water, power and land too cheaply?
India is offering tax breaks, cheap power and discounted land to attract data centres. But are the jobs and economic gains worth the cost to taxpayers, consumers and the environment?
On a recent visit to my sister in Memphis, I came across residents gathered to discuss a data centre in their neighbourhood. Since it opened, they say, its gas turbines have added to nitrogen-oxide pollution, and its cooling has drawn on the Memphis Sand Aquifer, the region’s drinking water source. The anger is national: in July, New York became the first US state to pause new data centres of 50 MW or more.
