Mass Effect TV Series Remains Active at Prime Video Despite BioWare Closure

The Mass Effect video game franchise may have come to an end with the shocking demise of BioWare, but IGN can exclusively reveal that its future on the small screen remains possible. Sources inside Prime Video have confirmed that the Mass Effect television series remains in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

Our source added that, as of now, all the creatives who were attached to the TV project remain onboard.

As of August 2025, Doug Jung (Mindhunter, Star Trek Beyond) was serving as showrunner with Daniel Casey (Fast & Furious 9) writing the series. The production team also included Jessica Jones executive producer Karim Zreik, BioWare's Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble, and former Marvel Studios boss Ari Arad.

The Mass Effect TV series has officially been in development at Prime Video since 2024, although it was first rumored back in 2021 after years of failed attempts to realize the sci-fi game franchise as a feature film.

We learned last year that the show won’t retread Commander Shepard’s origin story from the games and will instead be set after the original trilogy.

Daniel Casey took to social media this past April to shoot down reports that Prime Video wanted rewrites to make the show more appealing to a non-gaming audience.

The Mass Effect TV series had, at one point, been eyeing a Q4 2026 production start, but it remains without a release date as of time of this story’s publication.

Given the success of their Fallout TV series adaptation, Prime Video was reportedly hoping to capture lightning in a bottle twice with a Mass Effect show.
