The King of the Monsters is roaring to life in brick form
Godzilla is getting his first official Lego set, The Lego Group announced Tuesday. The new 5,363-piece set may not be the biggest Lego build ever, despite the King of the Monsters' stature, but it does set a new record for the toymaker: It's the biggest set yet to come out of the Lego Ideas program, which lets fans submit designs for community and official Lego approval.
Granted, the new Lego Ideas Godzilla set is tall. When posed with Godzilla's signature heat ray, the build stands an impressive 27.5 inches tall. Clear some shelf space.
The new Lego Ideas set is based on the Godzilla design from Legendary's MonsterVerse. "Textured scaly skin, jagged dorsal fins and a sweeping tail illustrate the creature’s imposing form, while his adjustable shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers allow fans to manoeuvre the Monster into poses fit for any battle," The Lego Group said in a news release. New York-based designer Matthew "MattE720" Esposito created the original Lego Ideas build, which was approved by the Lego Ideas Review Board and is now becoming an official set.
“Building Lego Godzilla was a real passion project," Esposito said in a statement. "I’ve loved both Lego building and Godzilla for years, so I wanted to capture his shape, scale and character as accurately as I could. The head was definitely the biggest challenge, but seeing the model come together and eventually reach 10,000 supporters after more than two years was incredible.
