In a November 2 investor relations report, Capcom celebrated the Street Fighter film’s success at the box office during its opening weekend and doubled down on its plan to keep expanding its IP through merchandise, events, esports, and possibly more movies.
Capcom and Legendary’s Street Fighter movie might’ve hurricane-kicked its way to number one at the box office during its opening weekend, but the stark drop-off it suffered in the following weeks has painted a grim picture for the possibility of a sequel. (The film suffered a 72% drop in its second week, with estimates saying it earned around $91.9 million globally on a reported $80 million budget.)
Despite this, Capcom has celebrated the film’s opening-weekend success with its investors, and says that it remains committed to pursuing its Single Content Multiple Usage strategy.
What exactly is that strategy, you ask? Good question: Capcom announced it in a 2023 integrated report, where it defined the plan as a way to “utilize our popular proprietary content for multiple game platforms” by “actively turning it into movies, theater productions, and other non-game media.” Basically, it means that it's pushing the visibility of its games by ramping up marketing, merchandise, crossovers, and, of course, movies.
In its latest investor relations report, Capcom reaffirmed its intention to continue pursuing this strategy in direct relation to the Street Fighter movie’s opening-week financials.
, as well as collaborations with game titles, resulting in the film garnering popularity across the globe,” the report reads.
