Will IDBI Bank public shareholders get any benefit from Fairfax stake sale?
The government and LIC will together sell a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for over Rs 52,878 crore at Rs 81 per share. LIC will divest 30.24% and the government 30.48%. The transaction will generate about Rs 26,337 crore for LIC, while the government will receive proceeds from its own stake sale.
IDBI Bank shareholders are unlikely to receive any direct financial benefit from the government-approved sale of a majority stake in the lender to Canada’s Fairfax Group , as the transaction involves the transfer of existing shares rather than a fresh issue of equity. The deal will monetise the holdings of the Union government and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), but will not directly bring sale proceeds to other shareholders. Valuation is key For shareholders who continue to hold IDBI Bank shares, the potential benefit will depend on how the transaction affects the bank’s market valuation and future business performance, rather than on receiving a share of the sale proceeds. The agreed price of Rs 81 per share provides a transaction reference point for valuing the lender, but does not guarantee that the market price will move to that level or remain there.
