Here's What It's Like To Take Delivery Of A Rivian R2

Taking delivery of a brand-new car is always an exciting moment. Getting your brand Rivian R2 dropped off at home is even more exciting, because this thing is crucial to Rivian's future and an important model for America's struggling EV industry. But a new EV like the R2 can come with a steep learning curve, given its extraordinary levels of tech. In this new video from State of Charge, host Tom Moloughney takes delivery of his new R2 and shows you what it's like, and how the delivery specialist educates the customer.

After getting the boring paperwork out of the way, the specialist will give you a walkaround of the car, going over the color, interior, and wheel options you chose and all that fun stuff. But they also go over how some of the functions work, like the frunk and the keyfob (the R2 mercifully has a keyfob and not only stupid keycards, like Tesla and Lucid). Do most customers need to know how to use every feature? No, probably not. But, hey, it's nice to have the educational option for those who need it.

Since Moloughney lives in New Jersey (as all wise people do), Rivian threw in a few goodies gratis, since NJ is a CARB state. So in the trunk of his new R2 was a J1772 adapter, a combo CCS1 adapter, and a portable charger, all on the house.

Moloughney says the specialist also went over some important info that even some seasoned EV owners might be curious about, like how the 120-volt socket in the trunk can deliver 16 amps, and the cool power sliding rear window.
