The India-specific platform will offer both ICE and EV powertrains in the ₹85,000–₹1.3 lakh price range, with the company also targeting higher exports from India.

Piaggio Vehicles plans to enter India’s mass-market scooter segment with a new India-specific platform offering both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrain options in 2027, Diego Graffi , Chairman, CEO, and Managing Director of Piaggio Vehicles, told ETAuto . The new scooter will be sold under the Aprilia brand and will be based on a platform developed specifically for the Indian market. It will be offered with a 125cc ICE powertrain and an EV powertrain, with the company targeting the ₹85,000–₹1.3 lakh price range. Advt

The higher end of the range will include more premium EV variants. “We want to address the price tag that is the most common here in India, basically between ₹85,000-90,000 up to ₹1.2-1.3 lakh, with the more premium EV variants. So it will be a range of products that we are going to introduce,” Graffi said. The company has been working on the platform for the past few years and sees the product range as an opportunity to expand beyond its existing premium positioning in India’s two-wheeler market. Graffi said the platform was designed from the outset to accommodate an EV powertrain, rather than adapting an ICE platform for electrification.

This, he said, would help optimise cost, performance and range. When asked whether the Delhi EV policy was behind Piaggio’s move towards electrification, Graffi said the policy was unlikely to alter the company’s EV strategy in India.
