MapQuest Now Shows Flock Cameras In Your Neighborhood

MapQuest has quietly turned its app into a lookout for the equipment that tracks license plates on American streets. The company's new Surveillance Layer puts reported camera and plate-reader locations right next to the traffic and incident data drivers already check before a commute.

The feature arrived in mid-October 2026. It covers more than one brand of hardware.

Drivers who turn it on get a map that names the system watching a given stretch of road, not just a generic warning icon.

Turning the layer on takes a few taps. Drivers open Map Options inside the MapQuest app and toggle Surveillance the same way it would switch on traffic or incident reporting, and camera markers populate along the visible route.

The data behind those markers is crowdsourced. MapQuest relies on users to flag equipment they have spotted rather than pulling from a single verified registry. That's worth keeping in mind before treating the map as gospel.

A blank stretch of highway on the map doesn't mean a clean bill of health either. A missing marker just means nobody has reported a camera there yet, and new hardware goes up faster than crowdsourced data can catch up.

Equipment also gets moved, swapped out or pulled entirely, and the underlying data set does not update in real time. MapQuest says the layer is a snapshot of known locations, not a live or complete inventory of every camera running in the country.

Flock Safety's name is doing most of the talking in headlines, but the layer highlights equipment from a group of known manufacturers.
