Corning India in talks with global OEMs for adoption of its advanced automotive glass, display technologies
The New York-based materials science manufacturer reiterated its plan to increase its technology integration from 2.5 million vehicles to 5 million vehicles in India.
Technology solution provider Corning is in talks with Indian and global OEMs to explore the adoption of its advanced automotive glass and display technologies. Known for its ceramics and glass, this aligns with its plan to expand its presence beyond emission-control solutions in the country's growing automotive market. The New York-based company is discussing a range of technologies for vehicle interiors and exteriors, including automotive-grade gorilla glass, dynamic decor, advanced edge and 3D cold form solutions. "We are in talks with OEMs to commercialise Dynamic Decor technology globally, and we are already seeing some success," SK Singh, Commercial Director, Corning Environmental Technologies told ETAuto. Dynamic Decor is designed to combine vehicle interior aesthetics with infotainment functionality. The technology allows a dashboard surface to resemble a conventional wooden-finish panel when the display is switched off. When activated, the surface functions as a screen, allowing automakers to integrate infotainment without compromising the interior design. The company, which supplies its Gorilla glasses to multiple smartphone brands, has customised it for automotive windshields. It is already supplying this product to one Indian OEM. Corning is also engaging with Indian manufacturers as well as global automakers present in India for its automotive Gorilla Glass solutions.
The cost proposition becomes more attractive as display sizes inside vehicles increase.
