93,997 Range Rovers Recalled Because Water Can Fry the Backup Camera

The drainage system in the tailgate isn’t doing a good enough job of extracting water, potentially causing the rearview camera to fail.

Land Rover is recalling 93,997 vehicles over a problem affecting the rearview camera. The recall includes Range Rover SUVs from 2022 through 2026 model years, regardless of which powertrain they were fitted with. The population of impacted SUVs left the Solihull, U.K., assembly plant between July 8, 2021, and June 4, 2026, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The camera failures are caused by an issue with the water management system for the Range Rover’s tailgate, according to the recall documents. The drainage system apparently may not be doing a good enough job of clearing away water, causing moisture to pool around the rearview camera. Over time, the documents state, this can damage the camera and lead to a distorted image being displayed on the dashboard-mounted touchscreen when the car is put into reverse. It may even cause no image to be shown at all, and either scenario could increase the risk of an injury or a crash.

The fix is pretty straightforward. Land Rover will drill additional drain holes in the underside of the tailgate trim in which the rearview camera is housed, and the camera will be inspected and replaced if needed. This repair will be performed at no cost to the owners. Dealerships will be notified on October 29, while notification letters are set to be sent to owners on or before December 11.
