Volvo calls it a ‘long-range’ plug-in hybrid, and with 73 miles of pure-electric range, it should mean fewer fill-ups.

Looking for substantial pure-electric driving range with the added security of a gas engine? Well, Volvo’s new “long-range” plug-in hybrid powertrain might be right up your alley. It’s coming to the three-row XC90, as well as the smaller XC60 for the 2028 model year, and this T8 variant provides nearly double the EV-only range of the outgoing PHEV models.

Volvo’s new plug-in hybrid powertrain still features a gas-fed turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, only now there’s a more powerful electric motor. While total output remains 455 horsepower, Volvo says the mightier e-motor will help make better use of the mid-size luxury SUV’s increased electric-only driving range. Thanks to a larger battery, which has grown from 15 to 38 kWh, the 2028 XC90 PHEV can now go 73 miles on electricity alone. Previously, that estimate was capped at 32 miles. Along with an MPGe rating that rises from 58 to 61, the new XC90 looks to help its owners save some money on gas by requiring fewer fill-ups.

Besides the new plug-in hybrid powertrain option—the gas-only 247-hp B5 and 295-hp B6 variants will still be available too—the 2028 Volvo XC90 remains the same as before. That means a handsome outer shell and an upscale interior with seating for up to seven, depending on the configuration.
