Vans Hits the Old Skool With an Elaborate Floral Pattern for Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is still more than a month away, but Vans has ensured plenty of time for its holiday-themed sneakers to arrive by dropping an intricate rendition of the Old Skool.

The Vans Old Skool “Dia de Los Muertos” features an inset floral pattern appearing across its suede upper. The brown detailing can be made out against orange sidewalls and a red vamp and a deep red vamp and heel stabilizer for an autumnal color palette. Orange stitching features throughout, standing out particularly on the red overlays that also include suede eyestays and leather Jazz stripes. Red leather is also used for the lining, while an off-white sole carries orange striping and red Vans heel branding.

Vans is still waiting for its revenue to catch up with the attention its been grabbing among sneakerheads over the past year-plus, but the Old Skool is undoubtedly its shoe of the moment. The 1977 model has been used for the hit “Souvenir” series inspired by an iconic Chanel bag, as well as the popular “Pearlized” makeups and the majority of Satoshi Nakomoto collaborations, the most recent of which led to the shutdown of Vans’ 5th Avenue store in New York City.

Heading into its 50th anniversary next year, the Old Skool may rise to an even higher level of prominence. Its original release as the Style 36 made it the first Vans shoe to feature leather and introduced the Jazz Stripe, which was a doodle by co-founder Paul Van Doren.
