WWD explores the unexpected industry-led Substacks, glossies and zines shaping the interiors sector.
MILAN — In a world ruled by scroll, click and pay, the design industry has been exploring new ways to engage and capture the fleeting attention of younger generations thirsty for a new point of view.
More and more creatives and leaders alike are diving into editorial as a way to convey their opinions on the industry, their creative spirit and information about their personal tastes and to build a community.
Earlier this month, color and design studio Backdrop unveiled Background Check, a print zine aimed at creating a cultural identity beyond its products. In an interview with WWD, cofounder and creative director Natalie Ebel said the endeavor was an extension of her role.
“It was an intense, hands-on process, from scanning materials to writing and shaping the layout. I wanted it to feel playful, personal and a little raw — more like a creative world you can explore than a polished product brochure,” Ebel said of the publication, which features designer Salehe Bembury on the cover. She added that he was selected for his eye for color and with the aim of introducing his work to Backdrop’s audience — while introducing the biannual zine to his.
With the support of the Backdrop team, Ebel led the overall creative vision and direction of the publication, including developing the editorial concept, copy editing, selecting the subjects and stories, shaping the content, and overseeing the visual direction and execution alongside contributors.
