THE WHAT? e.l.f. Beauty is reinvesting tariff refunds into product pricing and international marketing, joining major US retailers and consumer goods companies using government repayments to support brand development and promotional activity.
THE DETAILS e.l.f. Beauty has received approximately US$50 million in tariff refunds following a US Supreme Court ruling overturning tariffs on imported goods. The cosmetics company plans to use the funds to support lower prices across approximately 10 percent of its product portfolio, alongside increased marketing investment to strengthen brand awareness in key international markets, including the UK, Canada and Germany. Marketing expenditure for the financial year ending March 2027 is expected to reach the upper end of its 23 to 25 percent of net sales guidance. Other companies directing tariff refunds towards marketing and business investment include Macy’s, which received US$116 million, and Kimberly-Clark, which received US$45 million. However, industry analysts caution that some announced reinvestments may reflect previously planned expenditure rather than entirely new marketing budgets.
THE WHY? The refunds provide cosmetics and consumer goods companies with additional financial flexibility to support competitive pricing, brand visibility and international expansion, while highlighting how changes in US trade policy can influence marketing investment and commercial strategies across global consumer markets.
