Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the evening celebrated Airbnb.org’s $500 million housing commitment.
Getting Hollywood’s biggest names out for an event is becoming an increasingly difficult feat. Getting them in one room for a first-time gala? Even more so.
But Airbnb managed to do just that Wednesday night, drawing Charlize Theron, Serena Williams, Matthew McConaughey, Cynthia Erivo, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Zoe Saldaña, Charli XCX, Adéla, Kelly Rowland, Sienna Miller, Greta Lee, Demi Lovato, Jessica Alba, Elizabeth Banks, Joshua Jackson, Jaden Smith and more to Milk Studios in Los Angeles for the inaugural Airbnb.org gala.
The intimate gathering, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, marked a new chapter for the Airbnb-founded nonprofit, which provides free emergency housing to people in times of crisis. The company announced that Airbnb will donate a portion of its revenue from every stay to Airbnb.org, a commitment expected to generate $500 million over five years and put the organization on a path to providing 1 million nights of free housing annually. According to cofounder and chief executive officer Brian Chesky, guests won’t pay more, hosts won’t earn less, and Airbnb makes no money from the emergency stays.
“I mean, it’s not about the money,” said José Andrés, who curated the evening’s menu, reflecting on the announcement before dinner. “It’s what is going to be happening behind the dollar sign, and that’s what is very powerful.”
The chef, whose World Central Kitchen has worked alongside Airbnb.org in disaster zones, was philosophical about the state of the world.
“In the worst moments of humanity, the best of humanity always shows up,” he said.
