The New York-based Narciso Rodriguez first met the former Calvin Klein publicist when they worked together in the 1990s.
Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s effortless style still has its hold on fashion, and the fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez understands the allure better than anyone.
The pair became fast friends, working together at Calvin Klein in the 1990s, when they hung out and shopped together on their off-hours. Rodriguez was propelled into the global media spotlight after designing the subtly draped pearl silk crepe slipdress that Bessette Kennedy wore to wed John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1996. The stylish and striking young woman also became the designer’s muse.
Although 27 years have passed since Bessette Kennedy, her husband and her sister Lauren Bessette perished in a fatal private plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, the former Calvin Klein publicist’s influence on fashion carries on. Consumers’ zeal for her signature looks hasn’t dimmed eight months after Ryan Murphy’s drama series about her marriage, “Love Story,” debuted.
And even as fall takes hold, slip skirts remain a de facto uniform for many female Manhattanites, from downtown tastemakers to Midtown investment bankers. Celebrities are still wearing them too, including the actress Zoë Kravitz, who has been photographed in them on New York City streets, and Meghan Markle, who sported a slip skirt for the recent release of her As Ever advent calendar on Instagram. Jenna Ortega appears in an embellished slipdress on Vogue’s November cover. And actress Sarah Pidgeon , who portrays Bessette Kennedy in Ryan Murphy’s series, is still channeling her style for red-carpet turns.
