Waymo has published another update on the safety benefits of its robotaxi service. The company says it has now logged more than 300 human lifetimes of driving, and that the safety benefits are clear already.

Across Waymo’s 270 million miles of fully autonomous driving, the company says that injuries to at least 841 people have been completely avoided. Because Waymo robotaxis drive better than human drivers (on average).

This is notable, but what caught my eye even more is that this number was up significantly from 544 avoided injuries just in December. The number of avoided human injuries has been growing exponentially, as we can see in the following chart.

Waymo provides more info: “Our latest analysis of the Waymo Driver’s safety performance now covers over 270 million miles of fully autonomous operations through the end of June 2026 — the distance equivalent of driving the length of Route 66 over 110,000 times. This safety data includes analysis of five of our major metropolitan service areas: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

“Across these cities, the Waymo Driver continues to outperform human benchmarks. Regardless of fault, it was involved in 841 fewer injury-causing crashes — an 82% reduction compared to human drivers. When it comes to more severe collisions, the impact is even more pronounced: the Waymo Driver was involved in 95% fewer (20x fewer) serious injury or worse crashes than humans.”

An 82% reduction in injuries! And a 95% reduction for serious injuries!! That’s dramatic improvement. At this point, one could argue there should be subsidies for such service in order to protect more humans.
