Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) marketplace Supercritical has signed an agreement for up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar credits to be delivered by India-based Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL).
As part of the signed agreement, Jain Irrigation will supply the volumes from its 2026 and 2027 biochar production operations. More specifically, the credits will come from the company’s industrial biochar facility located in Jalgaon, Maharashtra.
The project active in this location is undergoing verification through Puro.earth, with an independent BeZero Carbon rating underway.
With this contract, Supercritical is bringing a fresh supply of high-quality biochar credits to a market where available biochar CDR volumes get claimed by buyers earlier each year.
In an H2 2026 biochar market report, Supercritical points out that 81% of this year’s high-quality biochar supply was already committed by July, three months earlier than at the same point in 2025, noting a trend of corporate buyers switching from one-off spot purchases to multi-year contracts.
Jain specializes in biochar production that uses residues from the company’s own food processing lines or other agricultural crops as feedstock.
At its industrial facilities, fossil fuel is replaced with syngas, and the produced biochar goes into Jain’s downstream agriculture businesses and back to farmers that apply it as a soil amendment.
The company’s agricultural operations have been running since 1963, serving a network of over 10 million farmers during this time. Currently, Jain is in charge of one of the world’s largest mango processing operations and tissue culture nurseries, producing 150 million plants a year.
