Mach launches Tier-1 autonomous solar mowing solution for utility-scale fleets

Off-road autonomy developer Mach has introduced a commercial solar mowing solution tailored for independent power producers (IPPs) and large utility-scale solar asset owners.

Vegetation management consistently ranks among the most significant recurring operations and maintenance (O&M) expenses for ground-mounted solar arrays. Keeping grass managed beneath and between panel rows requires repetitive, labor-intensive scheduling across expansive, often remote geographic footprints. Mach’s newly announced system aims to alleviate this burden by bringing driverless capability directly to commercial mowing equipment via a factory-integrated approach.

“Utility-scale solar sites present one of the most demanding operational environments in off-road autonomy—narrow clearances, dense panel shadows, GPS-degraded zones, and zero tolerance for infrastructure strikes,” said Colin Hurd, CEO of Mach.

By partnering as a Tier-1 supplier to equipment original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Mach’s technology integrates into existing drive-by-wire commercial platforms. According to the company, this allows equipment manufacturers to bypass lengthy in-house robotics development cycles while providing solar asset owners with trusted, dealer-supported machinery.

Mach’s platform incorporates several key technological layers designed specifically to handle the physical constraints of large-scale photovoltaic installations. Its factory-integrated architecture directly interfaces with commercial OEM drive-by-wire systems, enabling vehicle manufacturers to deploy autonomous mowers quickly without multi-year development overhead.

For precision navigation, the system combines Mach Perception, RTK-GNSS, and patented RadX phased-array radar to navigate reliably through dust, tall grass, and sun glare while actively detecting and avoiding tracker posts, guy wires, inverter pads, and hanging harnesses.

Furthermore, centralized fleet orchestration through Mach Ops enables a single remote operator to dispatch, monitor, and geofence multiple machines across nationwide portfolios.
