The Hungarian government is preparing a multi-year program to improve the energy efficiency of single-family homes and condominiums as part of its 2027 budget.
Hungary’s Ministry of Economy and Energy, István Kapitány, announced last week a HUF 600 billion ($1.83 billion) budget to support the renovation of 15,000 single-family homes and 15,000 condominiums annually, reaching up to 120,000 families by the end of the decade.
The program would offer beneficiaries non-refundable grants and interest-subsidised loans to cover up to 95% of eligible costs. Single-family homes would be eligible to receive up to HUF 15.5 million ($47,273), while condominiums could receive a maximum HUF 5.2 million ($15,860).
Analysis published by the Hungarian Solar Cell Solar Collector Association (MNNSZ) lists nine eligible activities under the program, including the installation of a solar PV system. The association explains gross billing will apply to new solar PV connections, so using the electricity on site, such as with a heat pump or storage systems, will improve the return on investment.
Heat pump installations are also covered by the proposed package, alongside connection to district heating systems. Other building retrofits including insulation, modern lighting and replacing windows and doors.
Kapitány added the total HUF 600 billion budget could bring at least HUF 1,100 billion ($3.35 million) of orders to the construction industry.
Detailed conditions for the program, including full eligibility and implementation details, are yet to be published. MNNSZ says the launch of the program depends on the adoption of the proposed budget and the plans still under negotiation.
