Materials technology company Fortera has signed a multi-year agreement with Meta covering environmental attribute certificates (EACs) associated with approximately 200,000 tons of its low-carbon cement, in a deal designed to help finance production expansion.
The agreement provides a long-term demand signal for lower-emission construction materials, potentially giving Fortera greater revenue certainty as it seeks funding for new facilities. EACs allow companies to support lower-carbon material production and address emissions associated with their supply chains without necessarily purchasing the physical product for immediate use.
Meta will also have the option to use the cement in its own construction projects and expand the agreement’s volume or duration in future years.
The partnership is expected to support development of Fortera’s planned cement plant in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The facility is designed to produce ReAct Cement, which uses captured carbon dioxide (CO2) and, according to Fortera, generates 70% fewer emissions than ordinary Portland cement production. The product has undergone third-party testing and meets ASTM standards for use in concrete.
The site, located along the Mississippi River in the Central Midwest, offers access to established transport networks serving U.S. and international markets. The project is also expected to create construction jobs and permanent manufacturing positions locally.
A multi-year purchasing commitment can help make industrial projects more attractive to financiers. Meta’s agreement links its demand for lower-carbon materials with the development of domestic supply in markets where it builds.
The plant is planned to produce 300,000 tons of cement annually. Fortera already operates a facility in Redding, California, with annual capacity of 15,000 tons.
