An Abertay University student has helped a local sustainable engineering company better understand the carbon impact of its operations through a real-world industry research project.

Emir Tashbaev, who is studying for a master's degree in geotechnical engineering, worked with ground screw and screw piling company RADIX on a master's project exploring how the company could better measure the environmental impact of screw pile foundation systems compared with traditional concrete foundations.

Tashbaev developed a practical carbon calculator capable of assessing the whole-life embodied carbon (WLEC) of different foundation solutions. The calculator considers key factors across the life cycle of a foundation system, including material production, transportation, installation and end of life.

The tool was tested using two real-world projects, including a battery energy storage development in North Yorkshire. In both cases, Tashbaev's research found that RADIX screw pile systems had a lower overall carbon impact than equivalent concrete foundation solutions.

The findings support RADIX's wider commitment to developing and delivering lower-carbon alternatives to traditional foundation methods, while providing the business with a practical tool to quantify and compare the environmental impact of different solutions on future projects.

Originally from Kyrgyzstan, Tashbaev had never visited Scotland before beginning his studies at Abertay. Now due to graduate in November, he has rounded off his degree by applying his technical knowledge to a live industry challenge in Dundee.

Tashbaev said, "Working with RADIX gave me an opportunity to apply my geotechnical engineering knowledge to a real industry challenge.
