Carbelim, a Kerala-based startup working on nature-based decarbonization solutions, has secured $1.05 million in funding from the IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund to scale its microalgae carbon solution.
The financial backing will fuel technology development and growth for Carbelim, as the company embarks on operations that are expected to create over 50 new jobs in this area of India.
Recognized among the country’s top 11 climate tech startups, Carbelim specializes in what it describes as a microalgae-based CO2 capture and clean-air technology that draws down atmospheric carbon dioxide and converts it to oxygen.
The startup is only the fourth recipient to date selected to receive financial support from the IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund.
Co-founded by Dr. Karthika Gopi and Rahul Babu, Carbelim has filed thirteen patents for its technology to date, 6 of which in India and 7 in the United States.
Dr. Karthika Gopi shared, “Our technology delivers efficient carbon capture, clean air, sustainable resource production, and advanced Micro Algae Tree (Liquid Tree) solutions for climate-positive cities and industries.”
Commenting on the secured funding, she added, “This investment will support our efforts to develop and scale our technology while also drawing attention to Kerala’s growing deep-tech startup ecosystem.”
Carbelim is also supported by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), whose CEO Anoop P. Ambika called this investment a major recognition for Kerala’s deep-tech startup sector.
Managed by Unicorn India Ventures (UIV), the Fund represents India’s first strategic integration between a premier research institution and a venture capital fund.
Created as patient capital by IIT Madras, IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP), and Unicorn India Ventures, the fund’s purpose is to back deep-tech startups in India.
