Botswana’s Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has opened a tender for the development of floating PV systems to be located at dams belonging to the state-owned water and wastewater utility.
Available details explain the tender begins with an expression of interest phase, with eligible and qualified companies, joint ventures and consortia invited to submit bids.
Successful bidders will be responsible for the design, development and operation of the floating PV plants.
Full tender details are available to download on WUC’s website. The deadline to submit expressions of interest, which must be delivered by post, is November 19.
WUC tendered a feasibility study for floating solar on its dams in 2024. At the time, it held site visits to its Gaborone and Bokaa dams, Lotsane dam and Letsibogo and Dikgatlhong dams, all located within the eastern part of the country. The Dikgatlhong and Gaborone dams are the two largest in Botswana.
The Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA) has tracked 190.5 MW of operational solar in Botswana, according to figures available in its project database.
Earlier this year, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for a 500 MW solar project, the largest of its kind under development in the country, to be paired with 500 MWh of battery energy storage.
